Japanese rock garden pictures

The Japanese word for what we think of as rock gardens or zen gardens is karesansui - dry garden. They're typically sand and stone gardens - a few feature rocks are carefully chosen and placed, and then the surrounding area is filled with gravel raked into lines or wave patterns. Sometimes mossy islands or clipped plants are used to suggest mountains in a sea of sand. Here's a selection of photos of these beautiful Japanese rock gardens.
